How to Improve the Performance of your Word document 2007?

Are you frustrated with the performance of your word document? Is word program taking long time to open your document? These types of problems are very common and most of the MS word users have faced it during their career.

Above described problems can happen due to several reasons like length of word document, embedded true type fonts, embedded objects & graphics, file format, versions & unformatted images but unformatted image is the most possible cause for the problem. Here we will discuss about “How to format & reduce the size of images or photos used in word document?”


Images or photos can increase the size of your word document dramatically. To save the memory of your hard disk and minimize the downtime of your word document, you will have to reduce the resolution of your used images or photos with loss-less compression technique. It will discard the crop area of image but does not change the quality of images. 

Note: High resolution images are good candidates for resolution like .jpg, .png, .gif, .bmp & .tiff but there are some bad candidates too like .wmf, .eps & .emf.

How to Optimize: There are ton of methods available to optimize images or photos that are placed in your word document, some of then are as follows:

Compress Images or Photos: It depends upon the number of colors used in your images. It enables colors take up fewer size. To do this follow bellow steps:

  • Right Click on the image that you want to compress
  • Picture tool will automatically enable.
  • Now click on the Format tab and go to the adjust section
  • Click on the “Compress picture” to compress your image or photo
  • To apply this setting for all images in your document checkmark for all images

Crop the Images or Photos: It reduces the size of picture by removing the vertical or horizontal edges of your images. To do this follow bellow steps:

  • Right Click on the image or photos that you want to crop
  • Picture tool will automatically enable.
  • Now click on the Format tab and go to the size section
  • Click on the “Crop” to crop your image or photo
Delete Cropped Area of Images or Photos: After the cropping images or photos, cropped areas are still the part of your document so for better performance of your document, it is recommended that remove the all cropped area on your images from the document. To do it, follows bellows steps:

  • Right Click on the image that you want to remove unwanted information from
  • Picture tool will automatically enable.
  • Now click on the Format tab and go to the adjust section
  • Click on the “Compress picture
  • A pop-up option will be appear
  • Now click on the options from the pop-up
  • Check marks the option “delete crop area of the picture


Note: If you are unable to see the picture tools option then make sure you have selected the image or photo that you to compress or crop.
