"Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close"

Microsoft Word is used for a multiplicity of applications by offices users. As it is commonly used tool, it is also prone to various kinds of problems. One of the most common error messages is:

"Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

The reasons for this problem are:

  • Word has been installed on a Windows XP supported computer, while its compatibility options are not supported by this software.
  • The normal or default template Normal.dot has been corrupted or damaged. To overcome this problem you need to remove the Compatibility Mode Setting in Windows XP
You need to locate and open the folder on the drive on which Word is installed:

drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office

Right-click on Winword.exe, and then click on Properties.

Click the Compatibility tab, click to clear all the check boxes, and then click OK.

If you still face this problem, you can follow these steps to temporarily rename the default or Normal .dot template to check if it is the reason for this problem. For this, you need to follow these steps:
  • Close all the programs.
  • Click on Start, and then on Search.
  • Click on All files and folders.
  • In first text box (All or part of the file name field or box) type Normal.dot.
  • Select My Computer in Look In field or box.
  • Then Click on Search.
  • On each detail of Normal.dot, right-click on the file, click Rename, and then type OldNormal.dot.
  • Close Search Results, and then start Word.
You will be able to overcome the above mentioned problem by following these simple procedures. If the problem still persists then Word files may be corrupted or damaged. You will need to use Word recovery software to recover data from corrupted or damaged files. Other common causes of Word file corruption can be a virus attack; unexpected system shutdown, software malfunction or a media read error.
